On Saturday, 28 September 2024 at 1955 hours a local resident notified our Group of a red flare sighting, lasting approx. 2 – 3 seconds, between Favourite Island and Jurien. This sighting was confirmed by other concerned residents.
The WA Water Police were immediately notified and the local Police were also involved. All our boaties had already logged off for the day, and there were no new log ons with our home base radio operator. The Marina car park was checked for any vehicles and trailers and other launching sites were also checked. Phone calls were made to our local boating members who reside along the foreshore to see if they could sight a vessel in distress. All these checks, phone calls, driving around to various areas, etc, are done by our volunteer members who give up their time with their families to keep our boating community safe.
A HUGE THANK YOU to all the concerned locals and visitors who quickly notified our Group of the flare sighting. A big thank you also to the Jurien Bay Police and all our wonderful volunteers who once again did an outstanding job!!
A reminder that there are severe penalties for the improper use of flares. Flares have a very serious purpose. Falsely indicating distress rightly carries a severe penalty, but it also wastes a lot of time and resources – possibly weakening the ability to respond to a genuine emergency. Do not leave flares in your vessel when it is not in use and keep them away from children.
